MEDICAL

DO YOU NEED HELP ENROLLING FOR MEDI-CAL BENEFITS, CALFRESH OR CALWORKS (AFDC)                 
North Star Family Center would like to help anyone that is in need                                                                   For absolutely no charge. We will sit with you and go through the application process step by step.
What To Expect When Applying for Benefits
You will be asked information about your household’s resources, income, and expenses.                               You might want to gather the following information to help you complete the application.                                 The process can take from 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on the family size.
Medi-Cal verification documents needed at day of enrollment?                                                                       The following is a list of acceptable documents needed                                                                                   for day of enrollment:

How Long Does It Take?                                                                                                                  
Forty-five (45) days are allowed to process a Medi-Cal application not involving a disability. If you are applying for Medi-Cal based on a disability, your application process may take up to 90 days depending on how quickly you complete the disability information and when your doctors and hospitals submit your medical records. To avoid processing delays, submit all information requested of you as soon as possible. Ask your eligibility worker for help if you cannot get the information. If you have an immediate medical or dental need, such as pregnancy or a severe illness, indicate this need on your application and your application may be processed more quickly.
Additional Proof Needed for Health Coverage
  • Information about any job related health insurance available to your family.
  • Policy numbers for any current health insurance.
Income requirements
What money that I receive should I report?
All income must be reported to the County. Money includes all income, cash or in kind support (ie, free rent or utilities).  Below are examples of monies received that must be reported:
  • Work, job or employment
  • Household bills paid by someone else
  • Self-employed business activities
  • real or personal property(such as a house or bank accounts)
  • a contribution from persons, organizations or assistance agencies.
  • Monies received from collecting recyclable trash
  • In Kind Income (Free Rent or utilities where someone else is paying for you)

Property requirements
Are there income or property restrictions?
All members of your family can have no more than $2,000 in resources (cash, bank account, etc.) unless there is a family member over age 60. Then the limit increases to $3,000.
If you live in your own home, it is exempt from the property limit.
Cars are eligible for certain exemptions depending on whether they are registered, or used to go to work or training. The county will explain how your cars are valued during your face-to-face interview.

You can also get Medi-Cal if you are:
  • 65 or older
  • Blind
  • Disabled
  • Under 21
  • Pregnant
  • In a skilled nursing or intermediate care home
  • On refugee status for a limited time, depending how long you have been in the United States
  • A parent or caretaker relative or a child under 21 if:
The child’s parent is deceased or doesn’t live with the child, or The child’s parent is incapacitated, or
The child’s parent is under employed or unemployed
If you are enrolled in one of the following programs, you can also get Medi-Cal:
  • CalFresh
  • SSI/SSP
  • CalWorks (AFDC)
  • Refugee Assistance
  • Foster Care or Adoption Assistance Program
